When You Accidentally Wish Upon a Satellite

Instrumentation: Big Band (see below)
Duration: 7'

2022

Commission Consortium led by The Footnotes Jazz Collective
Have you ever been looking up into the night sky completely enamoured by the stars only to realize that the most twinkliest one you're admiring is actually a satellite?

"When You Accidentally Wish Upon a Satellite" experiments in creating a starscape using 12-tone pointillism in a big band, combining warm and cool timbres available from the different instruments, their mutes, and doublings in the big band ensemble. This vast starscape is grounded by a bowed double bass feature playing the melody, which is a contrafact on "When You Wish Upon a Star." This work also features tenor saxophone and guitar solos.

The Footnotes Jazz Collective premiered this work at the Strata Festival of New Music on May 27, 2022.
