2022 Commission Consortium led by The Footnotes Jazz Collective
Instrumentation: Big Band Duration: 4 minutes
Have you ever been looking up into the night sky completely enamoured by the stars only to realize that the most twinkliest one you're admiring is actually a satellite?
This is the concept behind this new commission for big band.
"When You Accidentally Wish Upon a Satellite" will be experimenting in creating a starscape using 12-tone pointillism, and combining warm and cool timbres through the different instruments and doublings in the big band ensemble. This vast starscape will be grounded by a bowed double bass feature playing the melody, which will be a contrafact on "When You Wish Upon a Star." This work will also feature tenor saxophone and guitar solos.
The Footnotes Jazz Collective will be premiering this work at the Strata Festival of New Music on May 27, 2022. Visit Strata's website for more details.
If you would like to co-commission this work, please follow this link here. The consortium is based on a Pay-What-You-Can model, with a suggested contribution of $50. Members will be accepted into the consortium until June 13, 2022. Scores will be delivered to all members on June 14, 2022, and they will have exclusive performance rights from August - Decemeber 2022.
Sheet music will be made publicly available in 2023
