Presently there is a lot of conversation surrounding the issue of the music canon. The majority of music that is most often performed or taught in schools is by one singular demographic - dead white men. The music collections in our libraries are no exception to this. This piece is a commentary on the video opera collection available in the public library system in Saskatoon. The music was created by utilizing the call number on these materials - 792.542, or on occasion 782.1 (don't get me started on inconsistent cataloguing). This pattern then runs through the different scales and modes, creating small gradual changes. The resulting sound is like moving water.
Once the pandemic loosens its grip, the hope is to create an audio-visual experience of the music and the sea of dead white men that is DVD opera collection.
