Sea of Dead White MenInstrumentation: classical guitar (with optional video)
Duration: 3'06" 2019-2021 |

This work for solo guitar is a commentary on some of the problematic programming visible in the classical world that favours one demographic over all the others. This programming even trickles down into library collections. If the multimedia being created reflects the public performance habits, then the media available to libraries will reflect that same compositional demographic. Walking through a library looking for opera DVDs finds me scanning through a sea of music by dead white men.
The music was created by utilizing the call number on these materials - 792.542, or on occasion 782.1 (don't get me started on inconsistent cataloguing). This pattern then runs through the different scales and modes, creating small gradual changes. The resulting sound is like moving water.
Performers of this work are encouraged to create a multimedia experience of their performance by pairing it with their own video of a sea of dead white programming.
