Cinq Morceaux - Verre à vin

Instrumentation: trumpet, wine glasses, piano, double bass, and drum kit
Duration: 4'

2023

Commissioned by the Strata Festival of New Music
for the Cinq Morceaux concert, pairing food and music

It began with wine glasses. My wine glasses, to be exact. Hoping to create interesting soundscapes with the different ringing sounds that came from running your finger along the edge of the glass, only to be disappointed that my wine glasses aren’t truly glass (as I thought they were). There was no ringing sound. As I had cleared my calendar to play with cups, all I could do was fill them with water and cling them together. But therein came the base for the piece.

Over these clinking major thirds and perfect fourths plays a steady groove, allowing the listener to sink into the music while enjoying wine and conversation. This music is about creating a social environment to pair with the wine, as it often does in modern life. It is more simplistic in nature to contrast with the rich flavours of a merlot or malbec, but is infused with the buzz and energy of a social gathering.

Verre à vin was premiered on June 3, 2023 at Zion Lutheran Church at the Strata Festival of New Music "Cinq Morceaux" concert that paired music with culinary delights.
